Sterling O. Thompson

Funeral services for Sterling O. Thompson, 95, of Lufkin will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Horace Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Whitehouse Cemetery. Mr. Thompson was born April 21, 1920 in Ardmore, Oklahoma to the late Sterling Oscar and Henrietta (Lawly) Thompson and died Sunday, January 24, 2016 in Lufkin. Mr. Thompson, former resident of Abilene, had resided in Lufkin for the past 20 years. He proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater of World War II while in the United States Air Force. He was a retired Master Sergeant. Mr. Thompson was an incredible craftsman and could fix anything. He was an expert machinist and mechanic. While in the Air Force he was an expert airplane mechanic. His hobbies were woodworking and photography. Mr. Thompson was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lufkin. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Robbie Thompson of Lufkin; step-daughters and husbands, Vickie and William Fincher and Kathy and DeWayne Collins all of Lufkin; step-son and wife, Jerry and Tammy Joiner of Spring; grandson and partner, Mark Thompson and Scott Rubel of Austin; grandson and wife, Tony and Heather Thompson of Bastrop, grandson, Glenn Thompson of Austin; granddaughter and husband, Ginger and Cody Paty of Sweetwater; numerous other grandchildren and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Glenn Thompson; daughter-in-law, Rita Thompson; one sister; three brothers; and step-son, Danny Ross Joiner. Pallbearers will be Chris Collins, Trent Collins, Wes Fincher, Leonard Lout, Glenn Thompson, and Cody Paty. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Rubel, Mark Thompson, Tony Thompson, Trey Joiner, Joseph Joiner, Lance Joiner, and Travis Joiner. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, at the funeral home.
