J.O. Grimes, Sr.

February 5, 1933 — January 10, 2016

Funeral services for J.O. Grimes, Sr., 82, of Zavalla will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Zavalla with Pastor Stephen Forrest and Brother Cary Modisett officiating. Interment will follow in the Concord Cemetery.

Mr. Grimes was born February 5, 1933 in Saron, Texas to the late Alfred Andy Grimes and Hester Betty (Stanley) Grimes and died Sunday, January 10, 2016 in a local hospital.

Mr. Grimes was a lifetime resident of Zavalla. He retired from the Texas Department of Transportation, as a maintenance foreman, after 35 years. Mr. Grimes retired as Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 after 8 years of service. He was a five term Past Master in the Angelina Lodge #1263 A.F.&A.M. where he was a member for 61 years and a he was a member of the Eastern Star. Mr. Grimes served on the Zavalla School Board for 17 years, was organizer and president of the Zavalla Rodeo for 22 years, and a past president of the Zavalla Civic Club. He was a member of the Farmers Home Administration and currently on the board of Neches Soil and Water Conservation District. He received numerous Beautification Awards from the State of Texas where his picture is hanging in the Lyndon B. Johnson Library. Mr. Grimes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Zavalla.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lessie Grimes of Zavalla; daughter, Patricia Grimes Grubbs and husband John of Zavalla; sons, J.O. Grimes Jr. and wife Bonnie and Elton Ray Grimes all of Zavalla; 7 grandchildren, John Grubbs, Timothy Grubbs, Brandy Grimes, Adam Grimes, Andy Grimes, Matthew Grimes, and Brittany Grimes; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lizzie Boykin, Cardie Mieth, Geneva Henson, and Betty Courtney all of Zavalla; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Grimes’ grandsons.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home in Huntington.
