Louis Charles (L.C.) Jander, Sr., 94, of Lufkin, Texas, fell asleep in Jesus on November 16, 2015, of congestive heart failure. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Riesel, Texas, at 11:30 a.m.
L.C. was born March 14, 1921, in Otto, Texas, to Rudolph and Ida Kuretsch Jander. He was brought into the family of faith through the waters of holy Baptism on April 17, 1921, and was confirmed into that faith at the age of 13 on March 25, 1934. On December 4, 1941, Louis was joined in marriage to Lorena (Lorene) Winkelmann. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Houston, where they resided for over 38 years. They made several moves after that, including to Bellville and Sealy, Texas, where they made their home for over 20 years, and most recently, from Brenham to Lufkin, Texas.
L.C. began his long love with cars at a young age, working at a gas station/auto repair shop in Perry, Texas, on Saturdays even before he finished his schooling. In Houston, L.C. worked at a number of different places including a gas station, a welding company, Johnson Ford, and Earl McMillan Ford. He also owned his own auto repair shop for a time, drove a wrecker in the evenings and on weekends, and spent 20 years selling Snap-On Tools. L.C. and Lorene took part in many old car events, meetings, and parades and throughout his life restored many antique vehicles. After retiring from Snap-On, L.C. opened a lawn mower repair service near Sealy and later a sharpening service. Among his many talents, he created and sold custom walking canes.
L.C. and Lorene were faithful and active members at each local Lutheran church wherever they lived. Over the years, L.C. served as an elder, a member of the board of education, and was known to repair many items of a mechanical nature around the church and for church workers.
L.C. was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years 7 months; by his parents; by his brothers, Gene Edward Jander (in infancy), Bert Jander, Marvin Jander, Leonard Jander, Clarence Jander, and by his sisters, Irene Quandt, Anita Henderson, and Ethel Mae Dutschmann, as well as numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.
