Funeral services for James Davis Allen, 81, of Lufkin will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Elton Musick and Brother Ronnie Lusk officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery. Mr. Allen was born April 29, 1934 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Otis L. and Bertie (Crawford) Allen, and died Monday, September 28, 2015 in a local hospice facility. Mr. Allen was a lifetime resident of Lufkin. He retired from Champion (Abitibi) Paper Mill following 38 years of employment. Mr. Allen earned an Associates Degree in Evangelism from Angelina College and was a Supply Preacher, known for his heart in ministering to young people. Some at the paper mill knew him as “Preacher Man” and he always had a little book of 1st John to give. Mr. Allen was also known to greet everyone with the question, “Did you know that Jesus loves you?” He was a member and greeter at Keltys First Baptist Church. Mr. Allen enjoyed Southern Gospel music and he also enjoyed old western movies with stars such as John Wayne and Gene Autry. He served on the Hudson School Board for 12 years and was active in various youth baseball associations in Angelina County. Mr. Allen was known for his outdoor Christmas light displays. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rose Mary (Tucker) Allen of Lufkin; son, David L. Allen of Lufkin; daughter, Rivers Allen of Lufkin; granddaughters, Davin Denk and husband Duke of Waco, Shanda Wooten and Amanda Harris, both of Lufkin; grandsons, Russell Allen, Zach Allen and Mark Allen, all of Lufkin; great-granddaughter, Rena Harris of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Keith Allen; brothers, Earl Allen and Troy Allen; and sister, Barbara (Allen) Winters. Pallbearers will be Johnny Kendrick, Tommy Buschman, Jared Kendrick, Dennis Shoemaker, Duke Denk and Rodney Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be James Mitchell, Hartzel Jones, Darin Kendrick, Rusty Tucker, Howard Kline and Leonard Allen. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
