Funeral services for John Douglas “Johnny” Duncan, 76, of Zavalla will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Zavalla First Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Forrest officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Gladewater Memorial Park Cemetery in Upshur County.
Mr. Duncan was born November 23, 1938 to the late Tyler Eishman and Gracie (Newby) Duncan. He was born and raised in Tazewell, Tennessee, and died Saturday, September 12, 2015 in a local hospital.
A former resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana for over 20 years, Mr. Duncan had resided in Zavalla for 23 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked offshore for Halliburton for 28 years. Mr. Duncan enjoyed hunting, fishing, and “piddling”. He was a “jack of all trades” and was known for doing for his family and others before himself. Mr. Duncan was a member of the Zavalla First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Merrel Clifton, Judie and David Fontenot, all of Zavalla, and Jennie Rae Duncan of Lake Charles, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Jo Lee Day of Zavalla; grandchildren, Michael Day of Zavalla, Doug Clifton, Jessie Clifton, Arlie Clifton, Mollie Clifton, Heather Ferguson, Rebecca Fontenot, all of Zavalla, John Fontenot of Tyler, Michelle Fontenot, Carol Ann Fontenot, Jeremiah Fontenot, all of Zavalla, Jack Peters, and Mitchell Peters, both of Lake Charles, Louisiana; great-grandchildren, Stetson Williams, Easton Clifton, Slayder Leviness, Seth Crawford, Sophia Yarbrough, Levi Yarbrough, Talon Gillikin, McKense Gillikin, Hank Gillikin, Tidus Ferguson,and Raelie Fontenot, all of Zavalla; sisters, Dorothy Johns of Knoxville, Tennessee, Ann Estes of Tazewell, Tennessee, Mary Lou Venable of Baneberry, Tennessee, and Margaret Love of Tazewell, Tennessee; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives including his parents-in-law, Bobbye and Buck Thompson and brother-in-law, Bobby Jack Thompson, wife Sandy, and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 38 years, Carolyne J. (Thompson) Duncan; brother, Joe Tyler Duncan; and sister, Eva Debusk.
Pallbearers will be Doug Clifton, Jessie Clifton, Michael Day, John Fontenot, Jeremiah Fontenot, Jack Peters, Mitchell Peters, and Justin Ferguson.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning, and the family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Huntington.
