Michael David Thornton, Sr.

Memorial services for Michael David Thornton, Sr., 67, of Lufkin will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cornerstone United Pentecostal Church with Reverend Phillip Moore officiating.

Mr. Thornton was born January 19, 1948 in Floydada, Texas to the late Hollis Examander and Loree (Hammit) Thornton, and died Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at his residence.

Mr. Thornton had resided in Lufkin for 28 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enjoyed leatherworking, locksmithing and gunsmithing. Mr. Thornton was a member of the NRA. He was an avid builder of model airplanes, cars and trucks, and loved music from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Stephanie Weir of Lake Jackson, Michael, Jr. and Kara Thornton, and Chris Thornton, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Kyndzi Weir, Kamryn Weir, Damian Thornton and Kaden Thornton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Tim Sosa of Anton, Texas, Claudia and Eddie Aeyers of Marble Falls, Beverly Ann and Robin Newsom of Artesia, New Mexico, and Debbie and Joe Dunn of Hobbs, New Mexico; longtime caregiver and special friend, Julie Childers of Pollok; his favorite dog, Willie; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Holly Ray Thornton; and sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Hampy Kerby.

Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Thornton, Jr., Chris Thornton, Damian Thornton, Bobby Dean, Jr., Bobby Dean III, Tyler Wenzel and David Weir.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning prior to the services.
