Stephen "Jay Bird" Bennefield

Mass of Christian Burial for Stephen “Jay Bird” Bennefield, 64, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Gavin Vaverek officiating. Rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m., and the family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the Mass at the church. Interment will follow in the Huntington Oddfellows Cemetery.

Jay Bird was born July 7, 1951 in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late H.B. and Verner (Gentry) Bennefield, and died Monday, August 10, 2015 in a local hospital.

Jay Bird had resided in Lufkin most of his life. He was an electrician for Lufkin ISD for 19 years. He was a 4th degree knight with the Knights of Columbus Council 3404 and a volunteer at The Joseph House and St. Patrick Catholic School. He enjoyed reading, NASCAR, and garage sales. Mr. Bennefield was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Denise Bennefield of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Jacob and Carrie Bennefield of Lumberton; granddaughter, Elizabeth Bennefield of Lumberton; sister, Nan Alvis of Rowlett; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Susan Stubblefield of Lufkin, Mike and Melanie Stubblefield, and Barbara Stubblefield, all of Huntington; and his faithful companion, Darlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Winford Bennefield and Hollie Bennefield; and brother-in-law, Patrick Stubblefield.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Clark, Brian Humphreys, Don Brown, Patrick Risinger, Thomas Pendino, Elroy Edwards, George Wing and Eddie Kupec.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cheryl Flood, Diana Humphreys, Joyce Johnson, Jan Kupec, Lisa McCarty, Niki Quillin and Theresa Williamson.

Jay Bird was so instrumental and supportive of the establishment of The Joseph House, that the family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made in his honor to The Joseph House, P.O. Box 150554, Lufkin, Texas 75915.
