Lorene “Lorena” (Winkelmann) Jander, 93, of Lufkin, Texas, fell asleep in Jesus on July 8, 2015, of heart failure. The memorial service will be held Monday, July 13, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1001 Atkinson Drive, Lufkin, Texas, with Frank Starr officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Lorene was born February 11, 1922, near Mart, Texas, to Anna (Nolte) and Fred Winkelmann and was brought into the family of faith through the waters of holy Baptism on April 16, 1922, and was confirmed into that faith at the age of 13 on April 14, 1935. On December 4, 1941, Lorene was joined in marriage to Louis C. “L.C.” Jander. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Houston, where they resided for over 38 years. They made several moves after that, including to Bellville and Sealy, where they made their home for over 20 years, and most recently, from Brenham to Lufkin.
Lorene was a homemaker who raised two sons, cared for a number of children in her home for many years, and worked over the years as a baker in a school cafeteria, a seamstress in an upholstery shop, and a childcare provider in a daycare. She and her husband were faithful and active members at each local Lutheran church wherever they lived.
Lorene enjoyed sewing, knitting, and needlework, and she and L.C. took part in many old car events, meetings, and parades, L.C. being a restorer of many antique vehicles.
Survivors include her husband of 73 years 7 months, L.C. Jander, Sr.; sons, Louis C. Jander, Jr. and wife, Martha, of Bullard, and Larry Jander and wife, Dawn, of Livingston; grandchildren, David Jander and wife, Coreen, of Sealy, Bethany Schmidt and husband, Jon, of St. Louis, Missouri, Ted Jander and wife, Connie, of St. Louis, Missouri, Melissa Fetzer and husband, John, of Bastrop, Dinah Dobrowski and husband, Christian, of Sedalia, Missouri, Kevin Jander and wife, Lindsey, of Kingwood, and Justin Jander of Houston; 14 great-grandchildren, Seth, Elizabeth, and Luke Jander, Savannah Schmidt, Ellie and Evan Jander, Stryker, Stella, and Sterling Fetzer, Amehra, Vesper, Mazzy, and Bowie Dobrowski, and Greyson Jander; brother, Wilburn Winkelmann of China Spring, sisters-in-law, Peggy Jander of Fredericksburg, and JoAnn Easterday and husband, Bob, of Waco; brother-in-law, Robert Dutschman of Gladewater; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Theodor, Rudolph, Fred, Bill, and Henry Winkelmann; sisters Sophie Schlemmer, Hattie Schmedthorst, Annie Springer, Alvine Schraeder Knudson, and Anita Harwell; also numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
