Lyle George Moel

Graveside services with military honors for Lyle George Moel, 91, of Zavalla will be held Friday, June 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Concord Cemetery near Zavalla with Pastor Linley “Link” Ham officiating.

Mr. Moel was born March 31, 1924 on a farm in Tipton, Iowa. He was the son of George and Audrey (Sailor) Moel. He passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2015 in CHI St. Luke’s in Lufkin, Texas.

Lyle was baptized at the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Following graduation from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1942, Lyle served in the military from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He received his naval training in Farragut, Idaho, and spent time abroad on the USS Whitney in the Philippines and Korea. Lyle was employed by Link-Belt Speeder Corp. for 33 years as a district field service representative. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman, and a member of the American Legion.

Lyle, along with Roy and Thelma Roberson and his wife, Jo, was instrumental in the formation of the Lufkin Chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness. His devoted involvement spanned 27 years.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Esther Jo (Littrell) Moel; his children and stepchildren, Donald Moel, Ellen Moel, Michael Jones, Dennis Jones, and Leslie Jones; his brother, Dean Moel of Solon, Iowa; his sisters, Wilma Schowengerdt of San Ramone, California, and Sharon Lee Shilling of Phoenix, Arizona; as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Special recognition is given to Pattie Boyd, former daughter-in-law, who has been at Lyle and Jo’s sides through their journey for the last couple of years.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home in Huntington.
