Betty Jean Jones Lawrence

Memorial services for Betty J. (Young) Jones Lawrence, 76, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Lufkin’s First Baptist Church Chapel with Reverend Horace Fletcher officiating.

Mrs. Lawrence was born November 28, 1938 in Angelina County, Texas to James F. Young, Jr. and Dorothy (Wise) Young, and died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 in Lufkin.

Mrs. Lawrence had resided in Lufkin for most of her life. She had worked as an Administrative Assistant for the U.S. Forest Service for 42 years. After retirement, she worked for Congressman Jim Turner. Betty served as the first elected female of the Lufkin City Council from 1995 to 1999. She also served on the Lufkin Landscape Task Force. She was a former member of The Pilot Club. Mrs. Lawrence loved to travel, and her passion was her children and grandchildren. She taught Sunday School at Lufkin’s First Baptist Church where she was a member.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sherry Jones of Odessa; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Mike Hinton of Rhome, Texas; husband, Don Lawrence of Alto; grandchildren, Chris and Janay Jones, Grant and Diana Jones, Stephanie Page, Kimberly Lee and Katy Crooks; great-grandchildren, Kanin Jones and Peyton Lee; brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Verna Young of Lufkin; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Dub Allen of Pollok; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Lisa Jones of Clear Lake Shores, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dan Jones; and brother, Billy Young.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
