Funeral services for Veleta Jean Brookshire Powell, 80, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Horace Fletcher officiating.
Veleta Jean Brookshire Powell was born November 3, 1934 to Ossie Mae (Parrish) and Earl Winferd Brookshire. She married Alvin Winfield Powell, the love of her life, June 22, 1957. The Lord blessed them with two sons, Tommy Keith Powell and Brian Alvin Powell. She passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015.
Jean was a dedicated member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Her special ministry included teaching the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was active in the Benevolence Committee in collecting and serving food to bereaved families. She sent flowers to cheer those confined in the hospital, as well as floral tributes in memory of loved ones.
Jean is survived by her son, Brian A. Powell of Lufkin; grandsons, Nicholas Powell of Colmesneil, Brandon and Loretta Powell Harrison of Lufkin; great-grandson, Seth Harrison; nieces and nephews, Maxcine and Michael Miller of Terrell, Linda and James Kemp of Caldwell. Jean is survived by a host of friends and relatives.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her parents; husband, A.W. Powell; son, Tommy K. Powell; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Rev. L.A. Moran.
Pallbearers will be Mike Todd, Bradley Haskins, Glenn Haskins, Mike Miller, James Kemp and Jim Havard.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Kaemerling and Hayden Haskins.
