Funeral services for David Colwell, 78, of Zavalla, will be held Monday, December 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Zavalla First Baptist Church, with Brother Paul Mettlen and Reverend Jimmy Hodges officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery.
Mr. Colwell was born July 2, 1936, in Zavalla to Charlie Colwell and Emma DeLessie (Wilson) Colwell and died Friday, November 28, 2014, in a local hospital. Mr. Colwell was a lifelong resident of Zavalla. He worked for Lufkin Telephone Exchange for 35 years and was a retired Crew Foreman. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Zavalla. David was a “father/husband” figure to many. He was a good listener, kind and free hearted. Most of all, David became one of the strongest Christian examples that anyone knew. He was a shining light to everyone who knew him and we all have been blessed to experience his special love for life. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Louisiana Colwell of Zavalla; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Larry White of Zavalla; stepson and fiancé, Joe Wayne Pittman and Melanie of Zavalla; twin sister, Doris Weatherford of Lufkin; sister, Betty Sanches of Lufkin; Andrea and Jeffrey Weatherford, niece and nephew of Lufkin, and numerous other nieces and nephews; step-granddaughter and husband, Shanna and David Miceli of Hudson; 2 step-great-grandsons, Jordan and Carson Miceli; special friend, Susan Pittman of Huntington; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Fred and Bobbie Ragland of Diboll, S.A. and Janet Ragland of Pickrell, Nebraska, Tonie and Joan Ragland of Nogalus Prairie; sister-in-law Diana Byrd of Redland; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Runt Brewster of Apple Springs; and numerous other relatives.
Mr. Colwell was preceded in death by his parents; brother Charles Ray Colwell; sisters, Barbara Ann Spears and Maxine York; Nina Harvey and Robbie Shiflett and Helen Salmons; brother-in-law, Johnnie Weatherford and nephew, Nathan Weatherford.
Pallbearers will be Lynn George, Charlie Grumbles, David Murphy, James Crawford, J.O. Grimes, Jr. and Steve Forrest.
Honorary pallbearers will be J.O. Grimes, Charles Oliver and Wayne Oliver.

The family extends special thanks to Woodland Heights Hospital ICU nursing staff and to Dr. Lenin Pinnamaneni, Dr. Pavon Pinnamaneni and Dr. Musa Kahn.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Huntington.
