Funeral services for Wayne Allen “Cooney” Steel, 79, of Burke will be held Monday, November 10, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor William O. Lee and Tom Berry officiating. Interment will follow in the Ryan Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Steel was born February 16, 1935 at home in the Arbor Community on the Houston/Trinity County line to Willis and Mary Frances (Taylor) Steel. He died Friday, November 7, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Steel had resided in Burke most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a heavy equipment operator for various construction companies. Mr. Steel was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Lane Bass and Jennifer and Damon Scoggin, all of Burke; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Amy Ward of Burke; grandchildren, Andrew Bass, Hailey Scoggin, Macy Ward and Paige Ward, all of Burke, Miranda Scoggin, Hannah Scoggin, both of Hudson, and Jesse Dean and wife Nicole of Colmesneil; sister, Martha Lee of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Tommie Jean (Havard) Steel; and daughter, Janice Ward. Pallbearers will be Tom Berry, John Petty, Nick Brown, Michael McGuire, Raymond Mason, Clay Eldridge, Boron Bounds and Jimmie Hutson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Thigpen, Elton James, Keith Pigg, and his many friends and co-workers over the years. The family extends special thanks to the staff of Harbor Hospice for their loving care of Mr. Steel. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
