Funeral services for George Ray Taylor, 94, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Sr. Pastor D. Nick Sholars officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mr. Taylor was born June 23, 1920 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of the late Charles Monroe and Ida (Lancaster) Taylor. He passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at PineCrest Retirement Community. Mr. Taylor was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He lived in Lufkin all of his life. He, along with his three brothers, owned and operated Taylor Brothers’ Paint & Floor Covering for more than 40 years. He was a man of integrity, whose priorities in life were his family, friends, and community. He was a veteran, having served from May 4, 1942 to December 31, 1945, during World War II. He always considered it an honor that he was able to serve his country during a time of conflict and never forgot the sacrifice and honor of those with whom he served. He was a charter member of the Lufkin High School Alumni Association and a big fan of Panther football, having played for the legendary coach, Abe Martin. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church Lufkin. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Pat Taylor of Bryan and Jeff and Cindy Taylor of Lufkin; grandchildren, Robin Taylor, Laura Taylor, Jay Taylor and wife Jennifer, and Jamie Taylor; great-grandchildren, Brenden Taylor and Katelyn Taylor; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Lois Ruth Taylor; brothers, Bob Taylor, Alf Taylor and John Taylor; and sisters, Lucille Rye, Pauline Skinner, Annie Mae Kellow and Margarite Johnson. Pallbearers will be Randall Taylor, Lindsey Taylor, Mike Taylor, Butch Taylor, Mack Frazier, Ford D. Albritton, Mike Davis, and Dennis Johnston. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Taylor, John Lee Slaughter, and David Rusk. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Lufkin, 805 E. Denman Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon prior to the services.
