Mrs. Adams died Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in Lufkin, Texas after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was preceded in death by Harry Joseph Adams, her husband of 61 years, 11 months and 25 days. Mrs. Adams was born May 22, 1917 to Tom and Pearl (Cannon) Steed in Angelina County, Texas. She grew up in Lufkin, Texas, Ryderwood and Longview, Washington, and Diboll, Texas. Her years in these communities gave her a collection of happy memories and several long lasting friendships, some extending well over seventy years. She graduated valedictorian of Diboll High School in 1934. To earn money and spare her parents the expense, she quit college and began a career as a secretary in Houston.
During World War II she met her husband, Harry, who was stationed at Ellington Airfield with the Army Air Corps. They married February 13, 1943. The war years were spent moving among air bases and training centers in Houston, Denver, Colorado, Tucson, Arizona, and Liberal, Kansas. While Harry was stationed in Guam, Mrs. Adams joined her parents on the dairy in Lufkin. After Harry’s discharge from service at the end of World War II, they briefly lived in Fort Worth, then settled in Lufkin and later Hudson where their five children graduated from school. She continued her secretarial work, working at the Fenley and Musslewhite Law Firm, for County Attorney Dan Brazil, County Judge O.L. Hubbard, and at the Duke Insurance Agency.
Mrs. Adams was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lufkin where she served as a co-teacher of the Philathea Sunday school class, an elder, and as an eager sometime storyteller for the Children’s Moment of the worship service. She was a member of the Anthony Smith of the Texas Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, having served as chapter regent; she also served as state chairman of the D.A.R.-C.A.R. Committee and state chairman of the Junior American Citizen Committee. She was a honorary Senior State President of the Texas Society Children of the American Revolution, after having served as Senior State President, Senior State Second Vice President, and Senior State Chaplain. She held several senior officer positions in the Col. Elijah Isaacks Society of the Texas Society Children of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club and the New Era Study Club. As a past member of Story Art and a local writers group, she wrote poems and short stories, and developed a love of reading and telling children’s stories. She was also a member of the Hudson Parent Teacher Association.
