Marie Grimes Brookshire

Funeral services for Marie Grimes Brookshire, 88, of Huntington, will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Brother Gary Forrest officiating. Interment will follow in the Crain Cemetery near Manning.

Marie was born December 17, 1925 in Manning, Texas to the late Aaron and Cleo Grimes and died on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in a Lufkin hospice facility.

Marie lived in the Manning and Shawnee Prairie Communities most of her life. She attended school in Manning, Sulphur Springs, Zavalla and Shawnee Prairie. Marie, along with her husband, Jake, grew cotton crops and raised cattle for many years. She was employed by Village Cafeteria, Flournoy’s Florist, and the Angelina County Landfill office during her working years. Marie was a longtime member of Shawnee Prairie Missionary Baptist Church. She loved attending church and worshipping the Lord. Marie enjoyed having company and loved cooking for a big crowd. Her dumplings were enjoyed by many church gatherings.

Survivors include her son, Welton Brookshire and wife Michelle of Huntington; granddaughter, Kristin Vice and husband Brian of Hurst; grandson, Jacob Brookshire of Shreveport, Louisiana; great grandchildren, Hannah and Ryan Vice of Hurst; sisters, Lois Walters of Huntington, Lavern Stanford of Mineola, and Ranell Mangus of Lufkin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brookshire was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, JB “Jake” Brookshire; and brothers, R.E. Grimes, Sr., Leamon Grimes, Sr., and Carl Ray Grimes.

Pallbearers will be Gene McGallion, Bubba Thompson, Steve Britton, Leamon Grimes, Jr., Carl Stanford, Jr., and Glenn Bass. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Cooper, Billy Walters, Harold Jones, and Robert Stephenson.

The family would like to thank both Bethany Home Health and Hospice of the Pines of Lufkin for the special care given to Marie.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Lufkin.
