Maurice "Pepe" Bernier

Funeral services for Maurice “PèPè” Bernier, 73, of Zavalla will be held Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Reverend Joel Hitchcock and Reverend Dean Love officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Barge Cemetery.

Mr. Bernier was born April 1, 1941 in Salem, Massachusetts to Joseph Roland and Marie (Sauve) Bernier, and died Saturday, April 26, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Bernier had resided in Zavalla for 30 years. He retired as a Srgt. 1st Class following 25 years of service in the U.S. Army. Mr. Bernier enjoyed working at his saw mill and loved his cats, Jumper and Junior.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Sue Bernier of Zavalla, daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Thomas McCulley of Philadelphia, Tennessee; son, Maurice Bernier of Phoenix, Arizona; stepsons and daughter-in-law, Flint Nelson of Zavalla, Duff Garfield and Linda Nelson of Thicket, and Nathan and Dianne Nelson of Votaw; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Jody and Carl Reid of Zavalla; adopted son and wife, Mike and Katrina Wolfe of Huntington; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Elaine Bernier of Dam B; sisters, Janette Robichaud of Rhode Island, Simonè Bernier, Diane Tavars, Claire Camara, all of Fall River, Massachusetts, and Teresa Miranda of Rhode Island; special niece, Sandra McKinnon; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Kasen Nelson; and brother, Albert Bernier.

Pallbearers will be Carl Reid, Jim Nelson, Rex Lowery, Brian Nelson, Hartsell McCulley and Harley Walker.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home in Huntington.
