Funeral services for Barbara Spears Curbow, 85, of Lufkin, will be held Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Greene officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Walnut Grove Cemetery near Garrison.
Mrs. Curbow was born November 26, 1928 in Allentown, Angelina County, Texas to the late Tina E. (Simms) and William Bryan Spears. She died Monday, April 21, 2014 in a Lufkin hospice facility after a brief illness.
Mrs. Curbow was a homemaker and a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She attended school at Central ISD. She worked as an operator for the Lufkin Telephone Exchange briefly and then started her career as a homemaker. She was a tireless advocate for special needs citizens.
Mrs. Curbow had a servant’s heart and humble attitude. During her lifetime, she put God first and strived to please Him by focusing on those around her in daily life. She attended Allentown Congregational Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and VBS. She loved gardening, especially growing beautiful flowers, as well as canning and preserving from the garden. She was cherished and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Deborah and Robert Jacks, Marie Hight, and Karen Curbow, all of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, David and Wanda Curbow of Lufkin; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Amie Curbow-Hung and husband Tony of The Woodlands, Jaclyn Childers and husband Craig, Amber Curbow, Tara Stephenson, Sara Johnson and husband Bryan, all of Lufkin, Justin Jacks of Bastrop, and Jonathan Curbow of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Mrs. J.B. Spears of Fort Worth; nine great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Mrs. Curbow was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Curbow; son, George Curbow; son-in-law, Cary Hight; brother-in-law, Leo Curbow; brother, J.B. Spears; and sister, Elaine Chaney.
Pallbearers will be Craig Childers, Bryan Johnson, Justin Jacks, Jonathan Curbow, Jeff Surface, and Bobby Murray.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Ave., Lufkin, Texas 75904, or to the Allentown Congregational Methodist Church, 2339 FM 843, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
