Jimmy Thornton

Funeral services for Jimmy Thornton, 76, of Lufkin will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 4303 FM 842, Lufkin, Texas 75901, with Brother Elton Musick officiating. Interment will follow in the Berry Cemetery.

Mr. Thornton was born December 12, 1937 in Angelina County, Texas to Ernest and Faye (Bridges) Thornton, and died Monday, April 14, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Thornton was a lifetime resident of Lufkin. He served as pastor of Allen Gin Baptist Church for 39 years. He enjoyed hunting, farming and ranching.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Dean Thornton of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Wayne Welch of Lufkin; son, Glenn Thornton of Caddo Mills; grandchildren, Jeremy Welch, Justin Welch, both of Lufkin, Kaylee Thornton and Mason Thornton, both of Plano; brothers and sister-in-law, Ray and Billie Thornton of Lufkin and Joe Thornton of Carrizozo, New Mexico; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Richard Denum of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Faye and Henry T. Smith; father, Ernest Thornton; two brothers; and one sister.

Pallbearers will be James Holmes, David Johnson, Dean White, Dewayne Hawkins, Jeremy Welch and Justin Welch.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning prior to the services at the church.
