Walter R. Still

Celebration of Life services for Walter R. Still, 87, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Lufkin’s First Baptist Church with Dr. Andrew G. Pittman officiating. Interment will precede the services at 12:00 noon in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Still was born December 16, 1926 in Chireno, Texas to Walter Willis and Annie Laura (Granberry) Still, and died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in Lufkin. He had resided in Lufkin most of his life.

Mr. Still was a graduate of Lufkin High School and Baylor University, where he played football as a lineman. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Temple-Inland following 28 years of service in the Lumber Division. He loved the outdoors, and after retirement he enjoyed raising cattle. Mr. Still was a Deacon of Lufkin’s First Baptist Church, a member of the Friendly Sunday school class, and had served on various committees. He also faithfully taught Sunday school for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Still of Lufkin; daughters and sons-in-law, Delise and Scott McIlveene of Lufkin and Susan and Bob Ellzey of Azle; grandchildren, Jon Ellzey, Steven Ellzey and wife Audrey, Rebecca Henderson and husband Hall, and Laura McIlveene and fiancé Kolby Buckner; great-grandson, George Hall Henderson V; several cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Woodward, Jim Massingill, Jonathan Ellzey, Steven Ellzey, Hall Henderson, Kolby Buckner, and the Friendly Sunday school class at Lufkin’s First Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lufkin’s First Baptist Church Building Fund, 106 E. Bremond Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901, or Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.

The family would like to thank the staff of the George Henderson Building at PineCrest Retirement Community for their loving and attentive care.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
