Helen Slack Bruce

Funeral services for Helen Slack Bruce, 89, of The Woodlands will be held Monday, February 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Robert Burns and J.C. Tate officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bruce was born February 29, 1924 in Lufkin, Texas, where she lived most of her life, to Paula (Coward) Slack and A.C. Slack, and passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 in Houston. She married Doyle Bruce, Sr., the love of her life, November 9, 1945. He passed away November 23, 1999.

Mrs. Bruce was a member of the Chandler Church of Christ. She retired from the Social Security Administration office and enjoyed her membership in the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club.

Survivors include her sons, Doyle Edward Bruce, Jr. and wife Glenda of Tyler and William Scott “Bill” Bruce of Edom; daughter, Paula Ashworth of The Woodlands; grandchildren and spouses, Ryan Bruce of Portland, Oregon, Travis and Jamie Bruce of Ridgewood, New York, Natalie and Paul Mihlhauser of Corpus Christi, Neelie and Bryn Jones of Flower Mound, and James and Morgan Ashworth of Conroe; great-grandchildren, Caleb Jones, Blake Jones and Madison Mihlhauser; sisters-in-law, Alta Slack, Beck Castleberry, and Hellen Atkison; and many precious nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leslie Slack, Albert Slack and Billy Slack; and sister, Janice Slack Eshelman.

Pallbearers will be James Slack, Robert Slack, Vic Bruce, Phil Smith, Cooper Castleberry and Terry Clifton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon prior to the services.
