J.T. "Jay" Hopson

December 28, 1931 — February 7, 2014

Funeral services for J.T. “Jay” Hopson, 82, of Lufkin, will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Lester Hutson officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Masonic rites under the auspices of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263, A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Hopson was born December 28, 1931 in Zavalla, Texas to the late Nora (Lakey) and Elvin Hopson. He died Friday, February 7, 2014 in a Lufkin nursing facility.

Mr. Hopson was a retired Lab Technician for Southland Paper Mill following more than 40 years of service. He also worked as a realtor in Lufkin for 20 years. Mr. Hopson served his country in the United States Air Force, stationed in Tripoli. He was a member of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263, A.F. & A.M., a 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and had a 50-year pin. He also served as a Lufkin City Commissioner, a member of Lufkin’s Planning and Zoning Committee, and on the Civil Service Board. After retirement, he and his wife were park sitters and managers for ten years at travel parks in Colorado, the longest being Lone Rock Campground. Mr. Hopson was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and had lived in Lufkin most of his life.

He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Ron and Connie Hopson of Lufkin, and Robert Kent Hopson of Arlington; granddaughter and husband, Kristen and Seth Miles of College Station; grandson, Nicholas Hopson of Lufkin; great grandchildren, Zachary Miles of College Station and Kenley Hopson of Lufkin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mr. Hopson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janie Hopson; sister, Lorraine Hopson, and brother, Marlee “Babo” Hopson.

Pallbearers will be Elbert Poulan, M.H. Hopson, Carl Hattaway, Nick Hopson and Seth Miles.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
