Funeral services for Roberta Ames, 92, of Lufkin, will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Lufkin with The Reverend Randall K. Green and Dr. Brian Wiggins officiating. Private entombment will be in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mrs. Ames was born September 13, 1921 in Creston, Iowa to the late Zella Mae (Bridgeman) and Edward William Miers. She died Sunday, January 26, 2014 at PineCrest Retirement Community in Lufkin.
Mrs. Ames lived in Creston, Iowa, Superior, Nebraska, and Siloam Springs, Arkansas, prior to moving to Lufkin in 1953, her home for 60 years. She owned and operated Ames Fried Chicken for 38 years, and had also worked as a realtor. She was a member of Christ Congregational Church and a longtime member of the W.S.C.S. and the Leach Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Ames had been very active in the community. She had been a Girl Scout leader and a volunteer at Memorial Medical Center for 10 years. An avid golfer, she was a champion at Lufkin Country Club and a member of the Senior Ladies Golf Association at Crown Colony Country Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Dickens of Lufkin; granddaughter, Laurie Ellington of Cypress; grandson and wife, David and Erica Anderson of Nacogdoches; great grandchildren, Bonnie Anderson, Gracie Anderson, and Ryan Ellington; and nieces, Sharon Baldwin of Lees Summit, Missouri, and Cheryl Phipps of Lamoni, Iowa.
Mrs. Ames was preceded in death by her husband, Jim B. Ames, her parents, two sisters, and one brother.
Pallbearers will be Chris Copenhaver, Jim Hurst, Bennie Hollis, Ray Ashley, Ken Smith, and Jim Pluss.
The family would like to thank the staffs of PineCrest Retirement Center, PineCrest Home Health, and Hospice in the Pines for their loving care during her last months. We also thank her three angels, Chris and Julie Copenhaver and Hazel Evans. These three made it possible for her to live at home, even after she became ill.
