Margaret A. "Peggy" Metteauer

Memorial services for Margaret A. “Peggy” Metteauer, 88, of Austin, former longtime resident of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Henderson Chapel of Lufkin’s First United Methodist Church with Reverend Grant B. Barnes officiating.

Mrs. Metteauer was born August 26, 1925 in San Augustine, Texas to the late Margaret (Young) and James Andrew Phillips. She died Saturday, September 7, 2013 in an Austin hospital.

Mrs. Metteauer was a retired language therapist for St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School, where she worked for 27 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Southwestern and her master’s degree in education from Stephen F. Austin and was trained at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas under Sally Childs, one of the pioneers in the field of educating dyslexic students.

She devoted her career to her students and was a beloved teacher. After retiring, she volunteered in the gift shop at Woodland Heights Medical Center and at PineCrest Retirement Community. She enjoyed traveling with the Community Bank Travel Club. She was a longtime member of Lufkin’s First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class. Those who knew “Peggy” remember her unselfishness, her love of teaching and the special relationships with her students that lasted many years after their time with her ended. A resident of Austin for the past 4 years, Mrs. Metteauer had previously resided in Lufkin for 46 years.

Survivors include her children, Melinda Metteauer Jasko and husband Jerry of Austin, William Marcus Metteauer and wife Lynnae of Waxahachie, Michael Scott Metteauer and wife Maureen of Austin, and grandchildren, Meredith Daniels and husband Patrick, Josh Metteauer and wife Regan, Jordan Metteauer and wife Tara, Isabel Metteauer, Katherine Metteauer, and Elizabeth Metteauer; great-grandchildren, Livia Metteauer and Savannah Metteauer; sister, Patricia Pate of Gilmer, niece Barbara Winfield of Crockett, and nephews Phil Pate of Gilmer and Kent Pate of Sulphur Springs. A special member of “Peggy’s” family was Mr. Pip, her faithful cat for over 18 years.

Mrs. Metteauer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Myron Metteauer; and two brothers, Bob Phillips and Joe Phillips.

A visitation is scheduled at Carroway Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2013.
