Winnie Dell Shotwell Melancon

March 28, 1933 — August 17, 2013

Memorial services for Winnie Dell Shotwell Melancon, 80, of Lufkin will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the PineCrest Retirement Community Chapel with Pastor Mark Wilke and Brother Trey Ainsworth officiating. A reception will be held following the memorial services. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home, and a private burial will take place at a later date.

Winnie Dell Shotwell Melancon was born March 28, 1933 to George Leo Shotwell and Cleo (Crocker) Shotwell. Her faith became sight when she met her Savior face to face Saturday, August 17, 2013.

Mrs. Melancon taught school at Hudson ISD for 24 years, retiring in 1991. She received her BA from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1953 and received her MEd from Sam Houston State University in 1973. After retiring, she volunteered at her church, The Mosaic Center, Woodland Heights Medical Center, and The Chamber of Commerce guiding tours of Lufkin to visiting groups.

She was a current member of Carpenter’s Way Baptist Church, where she and Mr. Melancon were founding members. She and her husband were residents of PineCrest Retirement Community since 2011.

Included among her survivors are daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Bobby Allen of Lufkin, Katie Stephens of Houston, Edwina and Kenneth Baker of League City and Edie and Joe Applewhite of Tyler; grandchildren, Bobby Allen, Jr., Abby and R. J. Harris, Kacie, Kris and Kelley Baker, Josh Athey, Jodie Applewhite, Shelley Fraley and Angie Beauchamp; and sisters-in-laws Betty Ray and Ruby Melancon.

Mrs. Melancon was preceded in death by her Sweetheart of 51 years, Edmond Melancon on December 31, 2012; parents, Leo and Cleo Shotwell; brother, George Leo Shotwell, Jr.; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bernice and Grady Campbell, Jessie Ray and Daniel Melancon.

She was a Godly woman who loved her Lord and looked forward to the day when she would meet him face to face. During her last days, the Lord was right there with her, holding her hand each step of the way.

The Melancon family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff of PineCrest Retirement Center and Hospice in the Pines.
