Joan Cox Temple

Memorial services for Joan Cox Temple, 83, of Lufkin, will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Arthur A. Callaham officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Joan was born November 10, 1929 to Lillah Gore and Banks Lee Cox, Sr. of Texarkana. She graduated from Texarkana, Texas High School in 1946 and from Arkansas University in 1951. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Arkansas University. She was a member of Texarkana Cotillion Club and was a 1949 debutant.

She married John William (Bill) Temple in August 1950. She taught school for 4 years prior to starting a family. She helped start St. Cyprian’s day school and was a member of the first St. Cyprian’s School Board. She served on the St. Cyprian’s Alter Guild. She and her husband had the youth group, and she also substituted as a teacher at St. Cyprian’s when needed. She was a member of the Lufkin Service League (now Junior League) and was a Sustainer.

Joan was a homemaker, mother, devoted friend and loving wife. She loved playing bridge, golf and gin, and was an avid reader and crossword puzzle fan. She was one of five golfers to start the Senior Ladies Golf Association at Crown Colony, and served on its board for many years.

She was predeceased by husband, Bill Temple; her parents; one brother, Robert Gore Cox; and one sister, Jean Williams.

She is survived by her two children, John William Temple, Jr, and Mary Temple Russell and husband Doug Russell; four grandchildren, John Trevor Temple, Anna Elizabeth Temple, Hunter Temple Russell, and Mary Alannah Russell; and one great grandson, Blake Lee Temple. She is also survived by her brothers, Banks Cox, Jr. and wife Betty, Ben Cox and wife Karen, all of Texarkana; and sister, Janet Woodle and husband Rodney of Texarkana.
