Funeral services for Floyd H. Mize, 93, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jimmy Dunn and Reverend Mark Wilke officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Beech Creek Cemetery near Hillister.
Mr. Mize was born June 28, 1920 in Mena, Arkansas to the late Cora Dovie (Cox) and John Henry Mize, and died Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in a local nursing home.
A former resident of Nederland, Crockett, Longview and Brookings, South Dakota, Mr. Mize had resided in Lufkin for the past eight years. He retired following 25 years with the Pure Oil Company. He then went into education, his love, where he spent the next 23 years. In addition to that he was an Economic Development Manager for two years.
Mr. Mize earned two degrees from Lamar University and a Masters degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. He and his deceased wife have endowed scholarship funds set up at Sam Houston, Lamar, and Stephen F. Austin State Universities.
Mr. Mize was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to serving in World War II in the 43rd Infantry of the U.S. Army, headquartered in the South Pacific and Philippines.
He was a member of the Longview Masonic Lodge #404, Longview Eastern Star #610, Scottish Rites, Shriner, The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society, National Wildlife Society, Hardin County Genealogical Society, Tyler County Genealogic and Historical Association, Angelina Retired Teachers, and a member of several other organizations.
Having served in a number of organizations, Mr. Mize was past president of the Jaycees, Retired Teachers Association, Hospital Auxiliary, Lions Club, and many others.
Mr. Mize was a member of Carpenter’s Way Baptist Church and the T.E.L./Son Shine Sunday school class. He served as a deacon in several Baptist churches.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Roger Eastman of West Des Moines, Iowa; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Nancy Mize of Lufkin; grandchildren, Teresa Mize Jackson, Kristine Mize, both of Lufkin, Tricia Johnson of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Judson Eastman of Urbandale, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and wife, Hershal and Betty Jordan of Victoria, Texas; sister, Hazel Carter of Wichita, Kansas; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mize was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Donna (Jordan) Mize; brothers, Wallace, Johnnie and William Mize; and sisters, Louise Furby and Emily Howell.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
