Funeral services for Jonie Murphy Lawrence, 82, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Andrew G. Pittman officiating. Interment will follow in the Whitehouse Cemetery.
Mrs. Lawrence was born March 11, 1931 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Alice (Brasuell) and Chester Murphy. She died Thursday, August 1, 2013 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Lawrence resided in Lufkin most of her life. She was a 1948 graduate of Hudson High School and attended Angelina College, where she served as Editor of the college newspaper “Pacer”. Mrs. Lawrence was the Program Director at KTRE from 1969 to 1976 and was the host of “Hi Noon on Nine”. She had also been a columnist for the Lufkin Daily News, writing for the Youth Line and special feature items.
Mrs. Lawrence was a past vice president of the Texas Women’s Press Association, District 9, past president of the Christian Women’s Club and Literary Club, member of the Great Books Discussion Group, and originated the Angelina Statue project. She was a member of Lufkin’s First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 63 years, James “Jimmy” Lawrence; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Blake Jarvis; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Theresa Lawrence; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Ken Murphy; sisters, Bettie Wright, Sally Threlkeld and Jeanette Rodrigues; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Phillip “Mike” Lawrence; and grandson, Christopher Neil Leifeste.
Pallbearers will be Newt Courtney, John Bonner, Larry Sumners, Chris Nash, Blake Jarvis and J.C. Havard.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
