Marjorie Poland Mccullough

November 21, 1924 — July 31, 2013

Graveside services for Marjorie Poland McCullough, 88, of Lufkin will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Brother Roy Hall officiating.

Marjorie Poland McCullough, cherished wife and beloved mother, passed away at home in Lufkin, Texas Wednesday, July 31, 2013 under hospice care. She was born November 21, 1924 in Manning, Texas to Ettie Dora (Wilson) and Robert Wesley Poland. Raised in Shawnee Prairie, she was baptized at Shawnee Prairie Baptist Church, and graduated Salutatorian of her class at Huntington High School. She received her degree in Business Administration from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women’s University) in Denton, Texas, where she was secretary to the head of the Music Department.

While working as a secretary for Brazosport I.S.D. in Freeport, Texas, she met her husband of 63 years, William Morgan (Bill) McCullough on a blind date and they married March 4, 1950. They raised their family there (Velasco and Jones Creek). She was very family oriented and supported the children’s many activities and sports, and was City Secretary for Jones Creek, while Bill worked his store “The Minute Market” until his retirement in 1985. The couple returned to her home of East Texas in 1992 and moved into PineCrest Retirement Community in 2002, where they spent their final days.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Bill by two months; son, Robert Morgan McCullough (Captain Bob); parents; infant sister, Erlene; sisters, Gladys Del Poland, Mildred Lowery and Maxie Rene Ilgenfritz and her husband Lou; brother, Joe W. Poland and his wife Tommie (Parrish); sister-in law, Adele (Slover) Poland and son John; and brother-in-law, William G. “Bill” Cowart.

She is survived by her daughters, Marlana Clouse of Lufkin, Jean Ann Schaefer, her husband Pat, and their children Erica McCameron, Jamie McCameron, and Marci Schaefer, all of Plano, and daughter of deceased son Bob, Lauren McCullough of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother Robert L. Poland, Sr. of Lufkin; and sister, Merlene Cowart of Huntington.

Both of Marjorie’s brothers were A&M graduates, so her family became diehard Aggie fans. She also enjoyed any Texans, Cowboys or Astros games, was an avid bowler into her seventies, loved playing Bridge and 42, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, Manning reunions, traveling, and music. She was an animal lover, especially of kittens and pugs. She’ll be remembered as a beautiful blue-eyed quiet, reserved, graceful, private lady with great inner strength, who never complained, hummed constantly, went without so her children could have, her home-grown veggies from her garden, one who never asked of others, but a giver who loved unconditionally. She’ll be dearly missed by her well fed birds, stray kitties, and her family.
