Jack David Hicks

May 10, 1935 — May 28, 2013

Memorial services for Jack D. Hicks of Lufkin will be held Friday, May 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Congregational Church at the Lodge. Private interment will be held in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Jack D. Hicks, devoted husband of 52 years, father of 4, grandfather of 9 - known for his heart, mind, service, and burnt-orange blood, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 with his wife at his side. 2 Timothy 4:7 - I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

He was the first born son to the late Charles Medford and Ruby (Modisette) Hicks of Lufkin, and his first crib was a dresser drawer in a flower shop where his mother worked.

Jack graduated from Lufkin High School in 1953 where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. [On a side-note, his second-born grandson, Josh Jenkins -13 - has serious plans to break Granddaddy’s record]. A graduate of The University of Texas, Jack received a B.A. in 1957 and J.D. in 1960. He also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for 6 years.

Jack married the love of his life, Burtley Henderson Hicks, of Houston in October of 1960. Shortly after, the couple moved to Lufkin to join the Law Firm of Garrison, Renfro, and Zeleskey which became the Zeleskey Law Firm where he was partner for more than 50 years.

Jack was a transactional attorney who represented financial institutions (federal and state) across East Texas, and his experience involved a broad spectrum of business and real estate transactions - real estate development including shopping centers, malls, office buildings, hospital campuses, distributors, retailers, wholesalers, and a myriad of other business clients.

Jack was a member of the State Bar of Texas, and served as chairman of the General Practice Committee. He was a member, past president, and past director of the Texas Association of Bank Counsel, a member and past president of the Angelina County Bar Association, and a fellow of the Texas Bar Association.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Jack was a firm believer in community support. He was pivotal in the development of Christ Congregational Church where he was an active member. He was a member of the Lufkin Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, and board member of the Museum of East Texas. For the University of Texas, Jack was board member of the Fine Arts Alliance/Theatre and Dance Department, member of the Dad’s Day Association, and the Parents’ Association President’s Committee.

Of all of his accomplishments, Jack was most proud of his beloved family - his beautiful wife, 4 loving children (and their spouses), and 9 amazing grandchildren. He found great happiness in spending time with those grandchildren, watching his Texas Longhorns, tending to his plants, reading while listening to great music, occasionally indulging in a Lufkin Barbeque chipped beef sandwich with a side of potato salad, watching the birds, and outsmarting the squirrels.

Survivors include his wife, Burtley Hicks of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Trent and Carrie Hicks of Houston, TX; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Ash Hutchison of Heath, TX, Lindsay and Tommy Jenkins of Flint, TX, and Juliet and Mike McFarland of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Jenna and Annabelle Sellars, Finn Hutchison, Drew, Josh, and Jack Jenkins, and Michael, Fisher, and Ruby McFarland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charlie and Susan Hicks of Gilmer, TX, Van and Pam Hicks, Steve and Nancy Hicks, all of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Honorary pallbearers will be Partners of the Zeleskey Law Firm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Congregational Church, P.O. Box 27, Lufkin, TX 75902.
