Funeral services for James Emmett Travis, 86, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Andy Pittman officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Travis died Tuesday, April 9, 2013 in a local hospital. He was born January 22, 1927 in Moro, Arkansas. He moved with his family to Helena, Arkansas, where Emmett attended high school and met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth George.
In 1944, Emmett left high school in order to enlist in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, Emmett served in Guam for the duration of World War II. After the war, he returned to Arkansas to complete his high school education and enroll in the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
In 1951, Emmett and Mary began their married life together. The Lord blessed their 58 years of marriage with three daughters - Rita, Brenda and Lori; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Emmett relocated to Lufkin, Texas in 1972 to operate Brown's Shoe Fit. Soon after moving to Lufkin, Emmett and Mary became active members of Lufkin's First Baptist Church. They faithfully attended Sunday School as well as services on Sundays and Wednesdays. Emmett served three terms as the president of the Senior Adult Ministry.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Joe Myers of Lufkin and Lori and Harlan Faircloth of Chatfield, Minnesota; grandchildren, James Webb and wife Jennifer of Kyle, Texas, Melissa Bryant and husband Thomas of Houston, Texas, Elizabeth Ann Faircloth and Ryan Christopher Faircloth, both of Chatfield, Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Tristen Webb, Jordan Bryant, both of Houston, Madison Webb and Ella Webb, both of Kyle; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Josephine Travis of Memphis, Tennessee, Bill and Evelyn Travis of Talulah, Louisiana; sister, Margueritte Stanberry of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Emmett was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Travis and Eura (Hicks) Travis Mauldin; wife, Mary Travis; daughter, Brenda Kay Travis; and brother, Gentry Travis.
Pallbearers will be James Webb, Tristen Webb, Thomas Bryant, Jordan Bryant, Joe Myers and Roger Parker.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Murray Sunday school class at Lufkin's First Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lufkin's First Baptist Church Prayer Room Ministry or Van Fund, 106 E. Bremond Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901 or Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
