Memorial services for Rev. Max Stephens Griffin, 65, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chestnut Drive Baptist Church with Brother Blackie Cranford and Brother Danny Cryer officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Rev. Griffin was born January 19, 1946 in Rondo, Arkansas to the late Robbie Ophelia (Manning) and James Fredrick Griffin, and died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 in Louisiana.
Rev. Griffin moved to Lufkin in 1971 to serve as Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Lufkin. He resigned to follow a career in Christian Service and to attend the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as Youth Director at Lufkin's First Baptist Church from 1978-1985, where the program produced many Christian youth that are still serving the Lord today. Rev. Griffin served as pastor at Woodlawn Baptist Church, Bald Hill Baptist Church, Chestnut Drive Baptist Church, Plum Grove Baptist Church in Plum Grove, and New Beginning Baptist Church in Ft. Towson, Oklahoma.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Ann Griffin of Lufkin; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri and Randy Batten of Huntington and Christy and Albert Marmon of Lubbock; grandchildren, Brittney Batten, Kelsie Batten, Jeremy Batten, all of Huntington, Dane Harrison, Morgan Harrison, both of Lovelady, Gabriella Marmon, Emily Marmon, Mia Caite Marmon, Joseph Marmon, all of Lubbock, Bethany Marmon and Trey Marmon, both of Atlanta; brother, James Robert Griffin of Slidell, Louisiana; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Griffin was preceded in death by his daughter, Maxine Stephanie Griffin; and brother, Melvin Griffin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the UT Tyler Softball Team, 3300 University Blvd., Tyler, Texas 75799.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon prior to the services at Chestnut Drive Baptist Church.
