Funeral services for Floyd Oscar Cartwright, 84, of Wells will be held Monday, December 12, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church of Wells with Brother Horace Fletcher and Brother Grant Hanes officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Cartwright was born April 17, 1927 in Barsola, Cherokee County, Texas to Gracie Bell (Latham) and Oscar Smith Cartwright, and passed away Friday, December 9, 2011 at his residence.
Mr. Cartwright was a truck driver for East Texas Motor Freight in Lufkin and a retired truck driver for Lufkin Industries. He owned and operated Cartwright's Service Station in Wells, and worked as a welder. Mr. Cartwright enjoyed building things out of metal and wood, and loved to raise a garden. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Wells. He served as a deacon for 53 years. Mr. Cartwright served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received various citations and awards, including the World War II Victory Medal. After the service he attended LeTourneau College where he earned a certificate in welding.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Emily Ellen (Oliver) Cartwright of Wells; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Jerri Cartwright of Wells; daughter-in-law, Lisa Cartwright of San Augustine; granddaughters, Leah Cartwright of Houston and Veronica Cartwright of Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandson, Jason Cartwright of San Augustine; sisters, Dorothy Glover, Vernice Flournoy, Jean Pounds, all of Wells, and Betty Bunyard of Burleson; sister-in-law, Bernice Jacobs; brother-in-law, Billy Bunyard; 23 nieces and nephews; and pet, Cammi Grace.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gracie and Oscar Cartwright; daughter, Debbie Cartwright; son, Bryan Cartwright; grandchildren, Jeremy Wallace, Michael White, Kristen Cartwright; and sister, Anna Margaret Cartwright.
Pallbearers will be Jessie Oliver, Gary Latham, Steven Monday, Stacy Seymore, Joe Burke, and Jeffery Jacobs.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Calvary Baptist Church of Wells: David Pitts, James ""Bo"" McCaa, Don Byrd, and Tommy Seymore.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Kevin Farris, Dr. Brent Campbell, Dr. Kevin Hudson, Affinity Hospice, and special friends: Brother Joe Beran and Brother Josh Luellen.
