Private graveside services for Johnie T. Stewart, 87, of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, December 17, 2011 in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells with The Reverend Randall K. Green officiating.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Carroway Funeral Home.
Mr. Stewart was born November 7, 1924 in the Durant Community, Angelina County, Texas to the late Ollie B. (Poskey) and Claude A. Stewart. He died Thursday, December 15, 2011 in a Lufkin hospice facility.
Mr. Stewart was a retired school principal for the Lufkin I.S.D. following 25 years of service. He received his bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of Texas and his masters degree in Educational Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. Mr. Stewart served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a member of the 505th Bomb Group, which was a B-29 squadron. He was a 64-year member of Wells Masonic Lodge #915, A.F. & A.M., and the 20th Air Force Association. He was also a member of Christ Congregational Church, and a member of the Lufkin Pine Squares Dance Club for 32 years. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling extensively. Mr. Stewart had been a resident of Lufkin most of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jo Ann Stewart of Lufkin; sister, Lula Bee Hawthorne of Fort Worth; sisters-in-law, Jeanetta Stewart and Betty Stewart, both of Lufkin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mr. Stewart in death were three brothers, Dalford Stewart, Belvin Stewart and Billy Joe Stewart; and one sister, Lyn Dean Womack.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Christ Congregational Church, P.O. Box 27, Lufkin, Texas 75902; or to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 West Frank, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
