Berwyn Walker

Funeral services for Berwyn Walker, 88, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain, Major Buddy Walker, USAF officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells under the auspices of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263 A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Walker was born November 15, 1923 in Zavalla, Texas to the late Carey Cornelius Walker and Vara (Colwell) Barge, and died Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Hospice in the Pines Inpatient Facility.

Mr. Walker resided in Angelina County most of his life. He graduated from Zavalla High School, where he played basketball and played the clarinet in the band. Mr. Walker served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He grew from a Lance Cookie salesman to a successful businessman over a 30 year period, founding the Berwyn Walker Trucking Co. in 1967 with one truck, ultimately expanding to a family of employees totaling 50 and a fleet of recognizable red Mack trucks.

Mr. Walker was an avid antique automobile collector, and toured a large part of the United States in Model T Fords. He was a cattleman, and an exemplary horseman who broke, trained and raised horses most of his life. Mr. Walker was a past officer in the Angelina County Mounted Patrol.

Mr. Walker was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a 60 year member of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263 A.F. & A.M. He was a former Lions Club member, and a longtime member of Lufkin's First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Dorothy (O'Quinn) Walker of Lufkin; son, Buddy Walker of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Lynn and George Temple of Lufkin; granddaughter and husband, Marian T. and Craig Corley of Lufkin; grandson and wife, George, Jr. and Anna Temple of Dallas; great-granddaughters, Madison and Maya Corley; nephew and niece, Bill G. and Anita Durham of Webster; and great-niece, Sonja Durham of California.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his mother, Vara (Colwell) Barge; father, Carey Cornelius Walker; sister, Mozelle Franklin; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Matilda O'Quinn.

Pallbearers will be Andy Anderson, John Hedgepath, John Childerss, Jason Minguez, Gabriel Jones and John Hallmark.

Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Murphy and the staff of Carroway Funeral Home.

The family extends special thanks to Dr. Michael Huber, our faithful pastor friends, Brother Mardy Guidry of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and Brother Horace Fletcher of Hillcrest Baptist Church, devoted caregiver for five years, Sarah Reed, her son, Gabe Jones, Larry Byers, Hospice in the Pines and their entire staff, and the staff of Castle Pines Health and Rehabiltation.
