Funeral services for Brother Herbert D. George, 87, of Huntington will be held Friday, October 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Highway Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Kevin Gentry, pastor of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and Brother Lamar Denby, pastor of Highway Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Maydelle.
Brother George was born October 27, 1922 in Texas City, Texas to the late Betty (Meador) and Berthel Ott George, and died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at his residence.
Brother George had resided in Huntington since 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II, spending more than three years in the South Pacific. He attended Jacksonville Baptist College and the Texas Baptist Institute in Henderson. Brother George pastored at various churches in East Texas for 61 years, including 25 years at Highway Missionary Baptist Church, 19 years at Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Rusk, which was his first and last church to pastor, Weches Missionary Baptist Church, Stonegate Missionary Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Grapeland Missionary Baptist Church and Alto Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Letha George of Huntington; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Ken Marshall of Huntington and Becky and Charles Whisenant of Maydelle;' granddaughter, Amber Jacob of Huntington; grandson and wife, Josh and Melissa Jones of Huntington; grandson, Jared Whisenant of Whitehouse; granddaughters, Jasmine Whisenant of Maydelle and Lauren Marshall of Lufkin; grandson, Jeremy Marshall of Lufkin; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Carter, Jackson, Tucker and Gabriel; special sister, Thelda Bartee; special brothers and their wives, Billy Joe and Rosalee Killion and J.C. and Ailene Loper; and numerous cousins and other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Denman, Bob Batton, Jason Bridges, Brandon Bridges, Nathan Dyess and Billy Wayne Phillips.
Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Watson, Leon Lloyd, Glenn Ezell, Scott Alexander, Dick Bridges, Terry Taylor, Cary Jones, Bobby Coates, Dwain Coates, and the members of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
