Paul R. Mcgilvra

Funeral services for Paul R. McGilvra, 85, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Stephens officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Old Union Cemetery.

Mr. McGilvra was born November 6, 1924 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Dradie (Alsbrooks) and Charlie Vander McGilvra, and died Thursday, June 10, 2010 in a local hospital.

Mr. McGilvra was a lifetime resident of Lufkin. He served in the United States Army and retired from the Champion Paper Co. (formerly Southland Paper Mill/St. Regis) following 40 years of service. He was also a crossing guard for Lufkin ISD for 17 years. Mr. McGilvra was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. McGilvra served in the Group 1st Squadron 7th Calvary of the United States Army June 9, 1943 - January 18, 1946. His decorations and citations include Asiatic Pacific Theater, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal.

Survivors include his wife, Norma K. McGilvra of Lufkin; daughters and son-in-law, Lisa McGilvra Bingham of Cedar Park, Gina and Joe Kelley Sawyer, Jr. of Richardson and Pam McGilvra of Lufkin; grandchildren, Brandon Bingham, Ashley Bingham Guerra, Ryan Bingham, Kelley Jo Sawyer, Stone McGilvra Sawyer and Rhett Ownby Sawyer; great-grandson, Wyatt Guerra; sisters, Florence Womack of Hudson and Dorothy Bratton of Houston; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Mr. McGilvra was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy McGilvra and John McGilvra.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Bingham, Ryan Paul Bingham, Stone McGilvra Sawyer, Craig McGilvra, C.A. Smith and Troy Ray.

Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Lufkin VFW Post 1836.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
