Marie Orr Handley

Funeral services for Marie Handley, 88, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Andy Pittman officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mrs. Handley was born July 4, 1922 in Forest Hill, Rapides Parish, Louisiana to the late Lilly (Wynn) and Grover Orr, and died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 with her family by her side.

Mrs. Handley was a longtime Lufkin resident. She and Earl Handley married and moved to Lufkin in 1943. They were married for 62 years until death did them part. They are together once more.

Mrs. Handley graduated from Forest Hill High School and attended Louisiana State Normal Teacher's College (now Northwestern State University), receiving an A.B. in Primary Education. She was a teacher for Lufkin Independent School District for 36 years, from 1946 until she retired in 1982, teaching fourth grade at Kurth Elementary from 1958 until her retirement.

A member of Lufkin's First Baptist Church for 67 years, she taught the nine year old Sunday school class for many years. She was a member of the Amity & Joy Sunday school class.

Mrs. Handley loved her Lord, her husband Earl, teaching children, and traveling with Earl and their grandsons in the motor home. She also loved her azalea bushes.

Mrs. Handley is survived by her son, Dr. Ken Handley of Lufkin; grandsons, Christopher Handley of Lufkin and Craig Handley of Wimberley; nieces, Debbie Mayo of Lufkin and Carolynn Trammel of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; nephews, Greg Mayo of Pineville, Louisiana, Steven Mayo of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Michael Hall of Alvin; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Handley was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Handley; sisters, Maxine Hall and Yvonne Mayo; and niece, Betty June Hall.

Pallbearers will be Ken Gates, Gene Shamburger, Ronnie Pat Durham, Fred McCoy, Larry Sumners and Lee Friesen.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Karl Krohn, Dr. Agricel Lugo, and friend, Margie Gray.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Earl and Marie Handley Memorial Scholarship Fund at Lufkin's First Baptist Church, 106 East Bremond Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
