Funeral services for Oliver Murray, 84, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Harold Hancock and Dean Bullock officiating. Interment will follow in the Largent Cemetery.
Mr. Murray was born May 5, 1926 in Columbus, Mississippi to the late May D. (Partain) and Luther Edley Murray, and died Monday, September 20, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Murray, a loving husband and father, began preaching at age 14 and devoted the rest of his life to serving his Lord. He preached in Lufkin, Clute, Tyler, Nacogdoches and Huntington from 1954-1976, at which time he and his loving wife moved to Houston to work with the Lang Road Church of Christ. In 1980 he began full time meeting work, traveling throughout the United States. He was best known for his chart preaching which he fondly referred to as ""his parchments"".
A most humble gentleman, he was loved and respected by all who had the honor of knowing him. He will be sorely missed.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Roberta Lee Murray of Lufkin; daughter, Brenda Murray Martin of Lufkin; son, Randy Murray of Duncanville; grandchildren, Jennifer Murray, Jamie Miller, Jason Murray, Todd and Brooke Martin, Grant and Amanda Martin, Barett and Amber Martin Duren; great-grandsons, Taylor, Hunter, Peyton, Karter, Caleb and Owen; nephews, Mike Murray, Wayne Murray, Gary Murray and Craig Murray; nieces, Sharon Derrington, Athelyn Nail and Vicki Calvert; sister-in-law, Valera Lee; and a number of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Murray was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, L.E. and Willeen Murray; brother-in-law, Bob Lee; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tack and Betty Nail.
Pallbearers will be Todd Martin, Grant Martin, Jason Murray, Barett Duren, Mike Penn and Joe Penn.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Murray's nephews: Mike Murray, Wayne Murray, Gary Murray and Craig Murray.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, 1320 South John Redditt Drive, Suite A, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the exceptional care given by the nursing staff of Memorial's PCU Cardiac Unit, Castle Pines and Heart to Heart Hospice.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
