Funeral services for Ben Smith, 67, of Zavalla will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Pastor William Massey officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born June 30, 1943 in Dallas, Texas to the late Ethel (Grant) and Ben Wilson Smith, and died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 in a local hospital.
A former resident of Lancaster, Mr. Smith had resided in the Huntington/Zavalla area for 35 years. He was a Green Beret in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, and was a Millwright at Louisiana Pacific. Mr. Smith was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed visiting with his friends at Bill's Gun Shop. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Nancy Smith of Zavalla; daughters, Jacque Smith, Jaime Smith and fiance Dwayne Massey, all of Zavalla and Christi Lynn McCalla of Red Oak; sons, Keith Basey of Huntington and Marcus A. Madden of Nacogdoches; grandsons, Benjamin Hunter Smith-Gutierrez, Joe Anthony Smith-Gutierrez, both of Zavalla, Jonathan Taylor McCalla and Michael Anthony Reschman, both of Red Oak; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Jane and Mike Allen of Lindale; brother and sister-in-law, Robert G. ""Bob"" and Lisa Smith of LaDonia; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Bill's Gun Shop Gang.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home in Huntington.
