Funeral services for Winnie Marie Duke Spencer, 88, of Lufkin will be held Friday, April 16, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ty Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery.
Mrs. Spencer was born September 26, 1921 in Chireno, Texas to the late Girtie Alice (Crick) and Tom Henry Duke, and passed from this life Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Spencer came to Lufkin in 1940 from Union City, Tennessee. It was here she met and married her beloved husband, Oscar George Spencer, and here they shared over 43 happy years together until his death in 1983. They built their home within walking distance of the Redland Baptist Church, where they were active members for many years. Mrs. Spencer always had a special bond with the babies and toddlers she cared for in the nursery at the church. She was a second mother to many, and her ""family"" grew to considerable size over the years. Mrs. Spencer was a ""grandmother"" many times and she cherished her ""children"".
Mrs. Spencer was a hard working, Christian homemaker who ""?looked well to the ways of her household"". Her friends and relatives will always remember her kindness, gentleness, integrity and readiness to help anyone in need.
Survivors include her sisters, Rachel Frost of Lufkin and Sammie Dee Shelby of Missouri; brother, Woodrow Wilson of Lufkin; and a host of loving friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by two brothers.
Pallbearers will be Wes Self, Steve Clarady, Tommy Stovall, Doug Allum, Bobby Cates and Gary Frost.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Parkman and Jack Mott.
