Herman W. Varnado

Funeral services for Herman W. Varnado, 84, of Pollok will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Pentecostal Church of Lufkin with Reverend Stan Wachtstetter, Reverend Karl Smith and Reverend Merlin Swan officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery.

Mr. Varnado was born July 26, 1926 in Poplarville, Mississippi to the late Wilma Ardelia (Saucier) and Elijah Wilburn Varnado, and died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 in a local hospital.

Mr. Varnado had resided in Pollok for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Varnado earned a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and was a retired Timber Forester. He was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Lufkin.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Grace K. Varnado of Pollok; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Grace Varnado, J.W. and Patty Varnado, Jerry and Karen Varnado, all of Poplarville, Mississippi, Bennie and Teresa Varnado of Gulf Port, Mississippi, Kirk and Amy Varnado, Dr. Carlton and Nina Lewis, Winfred and Susan Lewis, and Clifford and Tammye Lewis, all of Pollok; daughters and sons-in-law, Kelley and Roger Young of Raymond, Mississippi, Sherry and Al Harrington of Lumberton, Mississippi, Cathy and Walter Simmonds of Pearland, Barbara Savell of Mobile, Alabama, and Deddie Bates of Pollok; son-in-law, Garland Bates of Pollok; 31 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Harlon Varnado, Paul and Kathy Varnado, all of Raymond, Mississippi and Howard Varnado of Slidell, Louisiana; sister and brother-in-law, Reba and Arlin Lee of Poplarville, Mississippi; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Don Linkenhoker, Lloyd Gillespie, Bob Scott, Derek Collins, Josh Reneau and David Crawford.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harlon Varnado, Paul Varnado, Howard Varnado, Arlen Lee, Jerry Gibson, Wayne Gillespie, Jubal Cannon and Joseph E. Cannon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 116 South Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the First United Pentecostal Church of Lufkin.
