James E. (Jack) Oliver

Funeral services for James E. (Jack) Oliver, 88, of Pollok, will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Brother Ross Black officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Houston County.
Mr. Oliver was born January 25, 1923 in Houston County, Texas, to the late Bertie (Cathey) and Jesse D. Oliver. He died Saturday, July 2, 2011 in a Lufkin hospice facility.
Mr. Oliver retired as a Maintenance Tech 3 from the Texas Department of Transportation following 32 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater of Operations in the Philippines. Mr. Oliver was a member of the Redtown Missionary Baptist Church, and had lived in Pollok all his life. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he also loved to garden.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jessie and Gwenda Oliver of Pollok, Joe Ed and Wendi Oliver of Hudson; grandchildren and their spouses, Stacey and Thomas Smith of Pennington, Melanie and Robert Adams of Pollok, Michael Avarodo of Hudson, and Andy Hanzel of Bullard; great grandchildren, Maxene Allen, Karsyn Allen, Shelbie Adams and Robert Adams, all of Pollok; sisters, Bernice Oliver Jacobs of Pollok, Ellen Oliver Cartwright and husband Floyd of Wells; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Juanita Sanches Oliver; his parents; one sister, Opal Lee Oliver Latham; and three brothers, Elza Oliver, Melvin ""Red"" Oliver, and W.M. ""Buster"" Oliver.
Pallbearers will be Leon Sanches, Henry Oliver, Ronnie Cartwright, John Howell, Jeffery Jacobs and Travis Latham.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Latham, Morris Oliver, Thomas Smith, Robert Adams, Hollis Stringer and Tillman Mathews.
Memorials may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 116 S. Raguet, Lufkin, Texas 75904
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
