Graveside services for Gladys A. Walters, 84, of Douglass will be held Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Walters Family Cemetery on the Walters Farm and Ranch in Douglass, Nacogdoches County, Texas with Brother Wayne Roberson officiating.
Mrs. Walters (nee Gladys Louise Alton) was born March 7, 1927 in Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana to the late Clarence and Nora Gladys (Jelks) Alton. She passed from this earth into the hands of Our Lord in Heaven Thursday, August 18, 2011.
Mrs. Walters attended Lida Benton Grammar School in Monroe, Louisiana, and graduated from Sophie B. Wright High School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1943. She was also a graduate of Soule Business College in New Orleans. On September 3, 1949 she married Robert B. Walters, a native of Tyler, Smith County, Texas, in Rayne Memorial Methodist Church in New Orleans, by the Reverend B.C. Taylor.
Gladylou, as she was known to her many friends, was an avid lover of books, with a great appreciation of literature. She also had a passion for the preservation of the Kemp?s ridley sea turtle. She was a member and former Sunday School teacher at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Houston, where she formerly resided.
Survivors include her husband of almost 62 years, Robert B. Walters of Douglass; daughter, Patti W. Herzik and husband Samuel W. Niesner of Schulenburg, Texas; son, Robert Mark Walters and wife, Toni S. Walters of Whitehouse, Texas; daughter, Wendy W. Schlinke and husband, Michael W. Schlinke of Saudi Arabia and Bullard, Texas; grandchildren, Robert A. Herzik, Benjamin A. Herzik, Alison W. Dominguez, Katie W. Porostovsky, Jared Schlinke and Kate Schlinke; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Samuel W. Niesner, Michael W. Schlinke, Robert A. Herzik, Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy, Michael Jared Schlinke, Benjamin A. Herzik and Robert Mark Walters.
Members of the Walters family wish to express their deep appreciation for the kind and loving care given to Gladylou by the people of Heart to Heart Hospice of Lufkin.
