Memorial services for A. Wayne Corley, 75, of Lufkin will be held Friday, February 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church Lufkin with Reverend Stephen Lantis officiating. Eulogists will be Judge John Sloan and Phillip Friesen. Private graveside services will be held in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Corley was born May 29, 1941 in Shelby County, Texas to the late Ersel (Yarborough) and Murvel C. Corley, and died Tuesday, January 31, 2017 in a local hospice facility.

Mr. Corley graduated from Garrison High School and went on to play football on scholarship at Stephen F. Austin State University. He graduated in 1963 and went to work for Price Waterhouse in Houston. After moving to Lufkin he began a 35 year career at Axley & Rode, LLP where he worked as a CPA and served as a Partner of the firm. After retiring from Axley & Rode as Managing Partner, Mr. Corley began serving as Executive Director of the T.L.L. Temple Foundation June 1, 1999, and also served on the Foundation’s Investment Committee. He retired from there May 31, 2013.

Mr. Corley began serving on the Board of Hospice in the Pines in 2000. He served as Board President, was a member of the Executive Committee for more than 15 years, had served as Treasurer, and was most recently an honorary board member because of his work with Axley & Rode. He was also a member of the Texas Forestry Association and was a Tree Farmer.

Mr. Corley was a big supporter of Hospice in the Pines, Boy Scouts, the Women’s Shelter of East Texas, and Stephen F. Austin State University. He also supported Harold’s House, Angelina College, the George H. Henderson Exposition Center, Boys and Girls Club, Buckner Family Place, Ellen Trout Zoo, CASA of the Pines, the Houston Livestock Show, the Humane Society of Angelina County, and Texas Forestry Museum. These were places he supported with matching grants; they were important to him and dear to his heart. He was also a contributor to SFA Athletics and the Lufkin Rotary Club. Mr. Corley was a member of First Christian Church Lufkin.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Barbara Corley of Lufkin; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Amy Corley and Craig and Marian Corley, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Claire, Clayton, and Cole Corley, Madison and Maya Corley; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and John Royall of Caldwell; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Mary Corley of Garrison; sister-in-law, Barbara Kruse of Garrison; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Jack Sweeney, Joe E. Rich, Sr., Leon Manning, Byron Smith, Dr. Dan Carter, James Slack, and Simon “Bubba” Henderson III.
Honorary pallbearers will be the current and former partners of Axley & Rode, LLP.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
