Hazel Duke Harbuck Hicks

Funeral services for Hazel Duke Harbuck Hicks, 93, of Lufkin will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mark Newton officiating. Interment will follow in the Fielder Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Hicks was born December 30, 1924 in Angelina County, Texas to the late Mattie (Gilbert) and Lewis Duke, and died Sunday, February 25, 2018 at The Joseph House in Lufkin.

Mrs. Hicks was a lifetime resident of Lufkin. She graduated from Lufkin High School in 1942 where she was a member of the drill team and senior basketball team. She was a student of the beloved Coach Abe Martin who taught her bookkeeping. Mrs. Hicks was the 13th Lufkin High School Alumni Association Coming Home Queen in 2010. She graduated from Satterwhite’s Commercial College and held jobs at the Texas Highway Department, Brookshire Brothers, Home Savings and Loan, and for 16 years as the Assistant County Auditor.

Mrs. Hicks had been a member of First Baptist Church Lufkin since 1971 and was a member of the Amity Joy Sunday School Class. She loved square dancing and was a member of the Pine Squares. She was also a member of the Quilt Guild of Lufkin. Mrs. Hicks attended Panther football games her whole life, participating and watching her children and grandchildren perform.

For the past six years Mrs. Hicks had resided at PineCrest Retirement Community, and moved into The Joseph House August 2017. She loved making chocolate covered strawberries to deliver to the residents of PineCrest. The residents there loved to hear her jokes at lunchtime.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Rose Ann Harbuck of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Pat Nicholson of Lufkin; grandchildren, Justin Harbuck, James Harbuck, both of Lufkin, Katie Langley and husband Justin of Bryan, Morgan Nicholson of Katy, and Mattie Nicholson of Lufkin; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Hearne of Lufkin; stepson and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lynn Hicks of Houston; nephew, Brent Parker and wife Shirley of Huntington; and niece, Jana Richardson and husband Ken of Lufkin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, James Bruce Harbuck; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and E.C. Parker; first husband, W.J. Harbuck; and second husband, Maurice Hicks.

Pallbearers will be Brent Parker, Travis Parker, Austin Parker, Roger Parker, Ken Richardson, and Justin Langley.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Harbuck and Justin Harbuck.

The family extends special thanks to The Joseph House and Hospice in the Pines for their wonderful care.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
